A Quick Guide for COPD Patients and Families
Keep this in your wallet or on your phone.
GO TO THE ER IMMEDIATELY IF YOU NOTICE:

1. Sudden Shortness of Breath
- struggling to breathe
- unable to speak in full sentences
- using neck or chest muscles to breathe
2. Oxygen Saturation Dropping

- SpO₂ < 88% (if using a pulse oximeter)
- bluish lips or fingertips
3. Change in Mental State

- confusion
- drowsiness
- new agitation
These may signal high carbon dioxide levels.
4. Severe Chest Tightness or Wheezing

Especially if not relieved by rescue inhaler.
5. High Fever or Suspected Pneumonia
- fever > 38°C
- chills
- cough with yellow/green sputum
- chest pain when breathing
6. No Relief After 2 Nebulizations
If rescue treatment isn’t working, go to the ER.
7. Difficulty Walking or Doing Simple Tasks
When normal activities suddenly become impossible.
Emergency Reminder
Bring:
- all inhalers
- list of medications
- pulse oximeter (if available)
- PhilHealth/insurance card
- last outpatient prescription
